History--Mystery of History/WV History

  1. Today, the girls did the Lesson 11 Pretest. After we went over that, we went over the lessons on Saul, David, and Solomon. For the lesson on Saul, we played a game of charades using words from the lesson--battle, blame, greedy, handsome, heart, hunger, impatient, king, pride, and tall. The girls have a homework assignment for the lesson on David--look up various Psalms and write down the subtitle of each of those Psalms, to emphasize the reason behind the writing of each of them. The girls also have a mapping lesson to do on the kingdoms of Saul, David, and Solomon. Now, if I can just find the Bible atlas, so they can do it! They also have to do their notecards on each lesson. Oh, I almost forgot about the timeline--we have figures to add to our timeline, too :)

  2. OK, we've now done Lessons 11 and 12. Both girls completed the Psalms assignment and the mapping lessong (Allison found the atlas!). Notecards for Lesson 11 are complete for both girls, but Sarah still needs to do hers. The girls both made a list of the kings and prophets of Israel (started it, at least...it will be an ongoing list during the study). We got our timeline caught up, too! Hoping to make a salt map of Israel over the weekend. Also assigned--"What did you miss?" at the end of Lesson 12...put various events in chronological order, using the timeline or table of contents. Allison has completed it, but Sarah still needs to do it.

Oh, yes, we also watched the first of the Presidential Debates last night. Sarah fell asleep during it; Allison got bored with it. It was over their heads, and they were talking about a lot that they didn't understand, but at least they have seen it, saw the candidates interacting, and saw (somewhat) how the debate worked (Romney pretty much took it over).

We also watched an episode of "Hatfields and McCoys" for WV History. 2 more to go! Lots of bad language, but very realistic portrayal of late 1800's WV. Had to explain a lot of what was happening to the girls, so they'd understand. Sarah gave up about halfway through, but Allison got interested, as long as I stop every so often and explain the plot to her ;)

  3. We have now studied about Elisha, Joel and Obadiah, Homer, India and Hinduism, The Olympic Games, and Jonah and Amos. The girls did their notecards on all of these lessons. They updated their chart on the prophets of Israel. We looked up locusts and cicadas online. We watched "The Odyssey" (whole show was on YouTube!). Girls are reading "A Children's Homer" on my iPad. They also read "Hour of the Olympics: Magic Tree House" on the iPad. Today, we're going to look at some information online about "the untouchables" of India and the Taj Mahal. We also need to update our Timeline. Oh, yes, I downloaded a cool app on the iPad for timelines, too, that links directly to Wikipedia! May show that to the girls today, too, or save it for later this week ;)

We will be working on "The City of Rome," "Isaiah and Micah (Judah's prophets)," and "Israel Falls to Assyria" this week.
